Worship at St Mary’s and St Matthew’s

Parish Mass usually lasts about an hour. We gather to hear God’s word, offer the Church’s prayer and celebrate the Holy Eucharist, in which Christ feeds his people with his Body and Blood in Holy Communion.

The service moves from the Liturgy of the Word—Bible readings, a sermon, the Creed and prayers—to the Liturgy of the Sacrament at the altar. Hymns, ceremonial and periods of silence help us worship with heart, mind and body.

The congregation stands, sits and may kneel at different points, but simply follow what feels comfortable. Children are warmly welcome. Incense is reserved for occasional Solemn High Masses rather than the ordinary weekly Parish Mass.

If you are unsure whether to receive Holy Communion, you are welcome to speak with the priest. You may also come to the altar for a blessing.

This reflective service normally lasts around 45 minutes. Evensong is the Church’s evening prayer: psalms, canticles, scripture and intercession are offered as the day draws to a close.

At Benediction, the consecrated Host is placed in a monstrance and honoured as the sacramental presence of Christ. We adore Christ in silence and song before receiving his blessing with the Blessed Sacrament.

The service is sung and incense is used as a sign of prayer and honour. A service sheet provides everything needed, and visitors may participate as much or as little as they wish. Holy Communion is not distributed at this service.
