Mary belongs within the story of Jesus
Christians honour Mary because God honoured her. The eternal Son truly took flesh from her and entered our human family for its salvation.
Teaching about Mary is never intended to distract from Christ. It protects the truth about who Jesus is and invites us to respond to God with the same attentive freedom.
My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.Luke 1.46–47
The foundation
How to approach this teaching
Honour, not adoration
The Church worships the Holy Trinity alone. Mary is a redeemed creature whose entire life depends upon grace.
Prayer within communion
As Christians ask one another to pray, so we ask the Mother of Jesus to pray with the whole Church.
Mary in the Gospel

1. The Annunciation
Mary receives God’s call freely: listening, questioning honestly and entrusting herself to his word.
Let it be with me according to your word. — Luke 1.38

What this means
Mary’s consent is neither passive nor uninformed. She listens, asks how God’s promise will be fulfilled and then offers her whole life. Her yes becomes the human doorway through which the Word takes flesh.
Practising it
Bring one area of uncertainty to God. Listen before speaking, ask honest questions and identify the faithful yes that is possible today.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Christian obedience is not coercion or the silencing of questions. God’s call respects human freedom and never excuses abuse.
Pray
Holy Spirit, teach me with Mary to hear God’s word, ask faithfully and answer with courage.
2. The Visitation
Carrying Christ, Mary goes in haste to serve Elizabeth and her praise becomes practical love.
Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her. — Luke 1.45

What this means
Grace turns Mary outwards. The Visitation joins contemplation, friendship, service and prophetic praise in the Magnificat.
Practising it
Notice someone who may need encouragement or practical help. Make contact without waiting to be asked, while respecting their dignity.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Service is not rescuing others to feel important. Mary’s presence honours what God is already doing in Elizabeth.
Pray
Lord Jesus, make me ready to carry your presence towards others with humility and joy.
3. At Bethlehem
Mary receives the vulnerability of God, treasures what she hears and contemplates the mystery of Christ.
Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. — Luke 2.19

What this means
At Bethlehem, divine glory is revealed through poverty, dependence and ordinary human care. Mary’s pondering is a model of prayerful attention.
Practising it
Choose a Gospel scene and remain with it slowly. Notice one detail, one word and one invitation rather than rushing to explanation.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Pondering is not avoiding action. Christian contemplation prepares us to recognise and serve Christ in vulnerable people.
Pray
Mary, help me welcome Jesus as he comes, especially where he is small, hidden or easily overlooked.
4. At Cana
Mary notices need, brings it to Jesus and gives the enduring instruction: “Do whatever he tells you.”

What this means
Mary neither controls Jesus nor makes herself the centre. She names the need, trusts him and directs the servants towards obedient action.
Practising it
Turn a concern into intercession, then ask what Christ may be asking you to do rather than only what you want him to change.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Prayer is not a technique for controlling God. It is a relationship of trust that remains open to God’s way and timing.
Pray
Jesus, through Mary’s prayers, help me recognise need and respond faithfully to your word.
5. At the Cross
Mary remains beside her Son when love brings helplessness, grief and costly endurance.
Standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother… — John 19.25

What this means
Mary cannot remove the Cross, but she does not abandon Jesus. Her steadfast presence teaches the Church how to accompany suffering without easy answers.
Practising it
When someone suffers, resist the urge to explain. Offer presence, listening and practical help; seek specialist support where it is needed.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Faithful accompaniment never requires remaining in danger or concealing abuse. Safeguarding and justice belong to Christian love.
Pray
Mother of Sorrows, pray that I may remain compassionate and faithful beside those who suffer.
6. With the Church at Pentecost
Mary waits in prayer with the apostles and receives anew the Spirit who has shaped her life.
All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer… together with Mary the mother of Jesus. — Acts 1.14

What this means
Mary belongs within the praying Church, not above or apart from it. At Pentecost she is a disciple among disciples awaiting God’s promise.
Practising it
Pray with the Church even when private prayer feels easier. Receive the gifts of others and offer your own life to the Church’s mission.
A misunderstanding to avoid
Marian devotion should never isolate us from Scripture, the Sacraments or the fellowship and mission of the Church.
Pray
Holy Spirit, make me one with the praying Church and ready to bear Christ into the world.
